The renewable fuel category is almost entirely met by corn ethanol (Renewable Identification Number [RIN] code D6), but advanced biofuel production exceeding mandates or other renewable fuels not meeting minimum greenhouse gas reduction requirements can also qualify in this category. Federal legislation provided yearly Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) volume requirements for each renewable fuel category. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updates volume requirements each year based on fuel availability. Now, EPA sets volume requirements. Mandates and RINs are ethanol equivalent.
