This graph displays the breakdown of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by economic sector. GHG emissions from the transportation sector increased 18.4% from 1990 to 2022 with a significant dip in 2020 likely because of COVID-19 restrictions. This overall growth contrasts with the electricity sector, which was the highest-emitting sector until transportation surpassed it in 2017. Transportation emissions have also increased from 23.4% of total emissions in 1990 to 28.5% in 2022, the largest percentage increase of any sector. Since emissions peaked in 2007, the electricity generation portion decreased 36%, the transportation portion decreased 8.4%, and the industry portion decreased 10%.
